Statistics Canada released new employment and building permit data recently, with both showing that Ontario’s construction industry is progressing towards pre-pandemic activity levels. Among the highlights:

  • Ontario’s ICI building permit values rose by 37% in May, and increased in 13 of Ontario’s 16 metro areas.
  • Municipalities are still experiencing delays in issuing permits or planning approvals
  • Construction employment surpassed 500,000 in June after remaining stuck at a seven-year low for previous two months.
  • The province’s unemployment rate fell in June, but is still higher than any other point in the past 38 years.
