BULLETIN: Building Permit and Employment Data Shows Signs of Recovery in Ontario Construction Industry
Statistics Canada released new employment and building permit data recently, with both showing that Ontario’s construction industry is progressing towards pre-pandemic activity levels. Among the highlights:
- Ontario’s ICI building permit values rose by 37% in May, and increased in 13 of Ontario’s 16 metro areas.
- Municipalities are still experiencing delays in issuing permits or planning approvals
- Construction employment surpassed 500,000 in June after remaining stuck at a seven-year low for previous two months.
- The province’s unemployment rate fell in June, but is still higher than any other point in the past 38 years.
