IMPACT offers a series of contractor upgrading courses, in conjunction with the Annual Ironworker Instructor Training Program. These courses are geared to insure that our contractor skills match those of the finest Ironworkers in the world. THIS YEAR WE ARE OFFERING FIVE COURSES:
Construction Contracting Business Fundamentals Academy Track 1: Establish Your BusinessThis five day, 40-hour course will be held on July 18-22, 2016 and is designed for current and future contractors (including ironworkers interested in starting a business or taking over a business) who desire to develop fundamental business skills. This course will focus on the skills needed to start a contracting business or strengthen an existing business. The course will address how to select a business model, develop a business plan, prepare to obtain financing, find work, set up an accounting system, collect money from customers, identify insurance requirements, understand contract terms and conditions, and avoid problems that will compromise success. This program will provide the business foundation that will strengthen a contractor’s ability to be profitable during the early startup or transition of their company. Construction Contracting Business Fundamentals Academy Track 3: Manage Projects This five day, 40-hour course will be held on July 18-22, 2016 and is designed for current and future contractors, project managers, or field supervisors who desire to develop fundamental project management skills. This course will focus on the skills needed to manage projects, including how to develop a schedule and sequence your activities; techniques for effective record-keeping and document management; the importance of daily logs; how to develop and process submittals, requests for information and change order requests; methods to manage customers and communication; effective techniques for reducing waste, collaborating with other contractors, and solving problems; and best practices for Project Leadership. This program will provide the project management foundation that will improve a contractor’s ability to start, run, complete, and close out profitable projects. Construction ProfitAbility Program This two day, 16-hour course will be held on July 18-19, 2016. The FMI Construction ProfitAbility© Program is an intensive, interactive, two-day business simulation, where six teams of participants compete against one another to produce the highest return on investment they can. The program is specifically designed to give each participant the experience of running a simulated construction business. The program exposes the participants to a year’s worth of decisions in a very compressed and intense business simulation. Some of the decisions they will need to consider: Project selection; Marketing and client relations strategy; Hiring and training of staff; Financial management of direct labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors; Project staffing and buyout; Cash flow; Debt; Equipment utilization; Change orders management; Payables and Receivables; Overheads; Insurance; Bonding; Project and company risk exposure; and Financial reporting (balance sheet and income statement). The program is a low risk way of letting people gain experience “running” a construction company. The FMI team will help the participants discover, first-hand, how different aspects of the business interrelate. Each round provides participants with a chance to succeed. Lean Construction: Collaborative Problem Solving, Planning & Scheduling This two-day, 16-hour course will be held on July 18-19, 2016 and provides an introduction to Lean Construction principles and practices, including collaborative problem-solving, planning, and scheduling. The course focuses on methods that encourage construction team collaboration, as well as effective communication between facility owners, designers, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers. The course highlights the techniques that maximize value for all project participants and minimizes waste in the design and construction of building projects. Course participants will learn:
• The advantages of Lean Construction compared to Traditional Construction methods with specific examples
• Techniques that foster more effective collaboration and communication among project participants
• How to effectively harness the power of collaborative problem-solving, planning, and scheduling
• Proven methods to maximize value and minimize waste
• How to implement a Lean Construction Program in your company
The course will use exercises and simulations to demonstrate the power and potential of implementing Lean Construction principles. Instructor: Todd Brink, Lean Culture Group, LLC
Project Leadership and Project Management This two-day, 16-hour course will be held on July 20-21, 2016 and will focus on how to provide project leadership and management based on FMI’s Project Leader Model. Explore the differences between Project Witnesses and Project Leaders and how contractors can foster these behaviors within their Project Managers to build best-in-class performance. Participants will learn collaborative negotiating, how to identify and track project key performance indicators, how to improve communication skills, and how to become a better leader through mentoring, coaching, and performance management. This course will also focus on building and creating powerful project teams, planning projects to maximize profits and customer satisfaction, understanding financial controls to enhance performance, and developing profitable long-term customer relationships. The Contractor Courses are offered in conjunction with the Ironworker Instructors Training Program, at Washtenaw Community College, 4800 East Huron Rive Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48105.

Contractors, please note that you must pay a $100 per-course, refundable deposit to attend the series of IMPACT contractor courses offered in Ann Arbor this July. Upon your completion of the course(s), your deposit will be refunded to your credit card or your organization. You may cancel with at least 14-days notice and receive a deposit refund. Cancellations with less than 14-days notice and No Shows will forfeit the deposit.
