Safety Talk: Work-Related Driving

In Ontario, MVIs are one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities. To protect workers from hazards related to MVIs, employers should have a safe-driving policy and program for their company and communicate it to all workers.

IHSA Safety Groups are recruiting!

IHSA is a proud sponsor of the WSIB Safety Groups Program and would like to congratulate all participating firms for implementing health and safety initiatives that are aimed at eliminating injuries, illnesses, and fatalities in the workplace. While the groups are still awaiting their final scores for 2014, recruitment for the 2015 groups is now ramping up. IHSA sponsors a Transportation Safety Group, an Electrical and Utilities Safety Group, and a Construction Safety Group. Focus group on small business safety seeks Sudbury-area firms

IHSA is conducting a focus group on small business safety in the Sudbury area this month and is looking for participants to share their ideas. This event is intended to provide insight on IHSA’s services as well as present an opportunity to better connect with the small independent firms in the Sudbury area. Holly Baril, Regional Operations Manager, and other IHSA employees will provide an overview of our current programs and services and discuss the best ways to assist small businesses with their health and safety requirements.

If you are a small business owner who would like to take part, join us on October 31 at 9 am at the Sudbury Construction Association. To RSVP for this focus group, please contact Crystal Gayle at1-800-263-5024 ext.7949. For specific details, contact Holly Baril at 705-979-0917.

Safety a recurring theme at Provincial Building Trades Conference

IHSA staff recently attended the Provincial Building Trades Conference in Niagara Falls. During the presentations, the health and safety of workers was a topic touched on by several speakers. For the Minister of Labour and the Chief Prevention Officer, it’s clearly a priority. Read the communiqué on the event.

2014 Fleet Safety Conference on November 7–9

The Fleet Safety Council’s 23rd Annual Educational Conference will be held at the Marriott Gateway Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on November 7–9, 2014. This event brings together fleet safety professionals from the trucking, bus, and courier industries as well as insurance and many other related businesses to discuss the latest in driver training, staff development, and risk management techniques.

It is an opportunity to connect with industry peers while learning valuable safety-related skills and information that can be applied directly to the workplace.

For more information on attending or sponsoring this event, please visit the Fleet Safety Council website. Or follow the Council on Twitter at @fleetsafetyconf.

Mobile devices on worksites: Sample Policy and Safety Talk

We all know the dangers associated with distracted driving. But what about the distractions caused by mobile devices on worksites? Working on a busy jobsite or operating tools and heavy machinery requires your full concentration. Inattention or distraction can result in injury to yourself, injury to others, damage to property, or even death. IHSA has created a sample health and safety policy on mobile devices on worksites as well as a safety talk on the subject.
